- Extreme heat with an elderly, infant, or medically fragile person: Let's treat this as urgent — please stay hydrated and cool with fans or a cooler room, and I'll get a technician headed your way as a priority. If anyone feels faint or ill, please call 911.
- Electrical burning smell with breaker tripping repeatedly: Please leave that breaker off rather than resetting it again, so nothing overheats — and we'll get a technician to you right away.
Know the terms
- Condenser
- The outdoor unit with the fan; it releases the heat pulled from inside the house.
- Evaporator coil
- The indoor coil on the furnace/air handler that gets cold and cools the air passing over it.
- Capacitor
- A small cylinder that helps the motors start and run; a very common wear part.
- Refrigerant
- The sealed cooling fluid (like R-410A) that carries heat out of the home.
- Mini-split
- A ductless system with an outdoor unit feeding one or more wall/ceiling heads for zoned cooling.
- Condensate drain
- The small line that carries off the water the AC pulls out of the air; it can clog and back up.
