Frequently asked questions
Do you charge for an estimate?
Estimates are free — we come look at the site, the slope, and what you need, and give you the exact price before any work.
How much does a retaining wall cost?
It depends on the wall type, the size, and the drainage and site, so we look at it and give you the exact price up front — the estimate is free.
My wall is leaning / bulging — is it going to fall?
I'm glad you called — please keep people and vehicles away from both sides and don't put any weight above it, since a wall under pressure can fail suddenly. We'll get someone out to look right away.
How soon can you come out?
We'll get a technician out to assess it as soon as we can — if the wall looks unstable I'll mark it urgent and find the earliest slot.
Why do retaining walls fail?
There are a few reasons, and rather than guess I'd want our technician to look — he'll tell you exactly what's going on and the best fix, and the estimate is free.
Do you fix drainage behind the wall?
Yes — good drainage is a big part of a wall lasting, and we install and repair the drainage behind walls. The technician will check yours on site.
What kinds of walls do you build?
All kinds — poured concrete, block, paver, natural stone, boulder, timber, and gabion. The technician will go over which suits your site and look, and price each.
Do I need a permit or an engineer?
Sometimes — taller walls or ones holding up a driveway or structure often need a permit and an engineered design, and we handle all of that. We'll let you know exactly what yours needs.
Can you build a wall to level my sloped yard?
Absolutely — leveling a slope or terracing a hillside is a lot of what we do. We'll come look and go over the options with you.
Do you do erosion control or seawalls?
Yes, we do erosion-control walls and waterfront work like seawalls — those can need permits, and we'll walk you through it after we see the site.
Do you do commercial retaining walls?
Yes, we handle commercial and larger projects as well as residential — tell us about the site and we'll set up a visit.
How long will the wall last / what's the warranty?
A properly built wall with good drainage lasts a long time, and we stand behind our work — the technician will go over the exact warranty when he's out.
Do you offer financing?
That's a good question — let me have the office confirm the current payment options and we'll go over them with you.
Do you service my area?
We're local and cover your area — I'll grab your details and get a technician out to look at the site.
⚠️ Safety first
- Wall leaning, bulging, or cracking badly / looks ready to fail: Please keep people, kids, and vehicles away from both the top and the bottom of that wall — when a wall is under that much pressure it can come down suddenly. Don't add any weight above it, and we'll get someone out to look right away.
- Slope or hillside actively slipping / mudslide risk: If the ground is actively moving or sliding, please keep everyone clear and, if it's threatening the house, treat it as an emergency and call 911. We'll come assess the site as soon as it's safe.
- Wall failure threatening a structure, driveway, or people below: Please move anyone and any vehicles out from below it and keep clear — if it's an immediate danger to the home or people, call 911. I'll get this marked urgent for our team.
- Sinkhole or ground sinking behind the wall: Please rope off or keep clear of that sunken area so no one steps in it, and we'll get a technician out to assess what's happening behind the wall.
Know the terms
- Hydrostatic pressure
- The push of water-saturated soil against a wall; the main reason walls fail.
- Weep / drainage system
- The gravel backfill and perforated pipe behind a wall that carry water away so it doesn't build up.
- Geogrid
- Reinforcement layers buried in the soil behind taller walls to hold the soil and wall together.
- Batter / setback
- The slight backward lean of a wall into the hill that helps it resist pressure.
- Segmental block (SRW)
