⚠️ Safety first
- A stair tread is broken, cracked, or feels like it could give way: Please keep everyone off that staircase for now, or at least that step, until our technician can make it safe — a broken tread is a real fall risk. We'll get someone out to you as soon as we can.
- The railing or a guard is loose, wobbly, or has gaps: Please don't rely on that railing to catch you, and keep small children and pets away from any open side or gap until it's fixed. We'll get a technician out to make it solid and safe.
- Someone has already fallen and is hurt: Please take care of them first — if anyone is hurt, call 911 right away. Once everyone's okay, we'll get the stairs fixed so it doesn't happen again.
- Balusters missing with a child or pet in the home: Please block off that open side however you can for now and keep children and pets away from it — the gap is a fall risk. We'll prioritize getting a technician out to close it in safely.
Know the terms
- Tread and riser
- The tread is the flat step you walk on; the riser is the vertical face between steps.
- Stringer
- The sawtooth support board on each side that carries the treads and risers.
- Baluster / spindle
- The vertical bars between the handrail and the stair that fill in the guard.
- Newel post
- The sturdy anchor post at the top, bottom, or turns that the railing attaches to.
- Handrail
- The graspable rail you hold going up and down; height and shape are set by code.
- Rise and run
- The height and depth of each step; they must be consistent so people don't trip.
